Stalin said that the police force should not only detect crimes, but strive to prevent crimes
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered the police to crack down on evil elements who incite caste or communal hatred on social media and said the police should strive to achieve zero crime by pre-empting criminals.
Expressing concern over the increasing incidence of caste and sectarian hatred spreading on social media, the Prime Minister said police should monitor social media and act firmly with those who incite people.
These malicious elements can disturb social harmony affecting innocent people. It should be monitored and cracked down on,” he said, while reviewing the law and order situation with Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena, Principal Secretary to Home Ministry P Amuda, DGP Shankar Jewal and other Secretariat Police officials here.
Police forces should not only detect crimes, but also strive to prevent crimes. “Instead of focusing on the statistics of lower crime rates compared to the last month or year, I stress that the police should ensure that there are no crimes by preempting criminals,” he said.
He said the police must act promptly on any complaints received from the public, especially women, and ensure that violators are punished.
He said, “Since this government pays attention to the welfare and safety of girls and women, it is the duty of the government to keep educational institutions, workplaces and public places free from offenses against women or girls.”
Stalin said his intervention had ensured that illegal brewing and sale of grapes had been significantly reduced in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts but that more steps should be taken to completely curb illegal sale of arak.
He advised the police to identify and nip law and order problems in the bud, and to ensure that people were not affected by crimes in any way. “The police should take precautions because the Lok Sabha elections are scheduled for next year,” he added.
The prime minister said suspects brought to police stations should be treated with dignity and police should refrain from harassing them, adding that deaths in custody should be prevented.
He also said that efforts must be made to completely eradicate drugs in the state.
The Cabinet expressed satisfaction with the police’s work, particularly in maintaining law and order.
