Spain’s top seed and world number one Carlos Alcaraz defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 in the fourth round of Wimbledon on Monday, July 10. hours, as the 20-year-old Spaniard’s win kept him in contention for his second Grand Slam title.
The 27-year-old Italian, a former runner-up at Wimbledon, got off to a good start, but was unable to maintain his good start. Alcaraz proved too strong for him in the end. Spain’s Holger Rohn will face Dane in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, July 12th.
On that note, let’s look at two things that stood out in Alcaraz’s fourth-round match against Berrettini:
Matteo Berrettini attacked Alcaraz’s second serve and had good results in the first set. The 27-year-old went on to break the Spanish forward line in the eighth game of the set to take a 5-3 lead and then managed to serve. The Italian lunged home repeatedly to put Alcaraz on the back foot and won several points with volleys and overhead shots.
Al Karez was able to earn only 43% of the points on his second serve in the first set. This is the second set that the Spaniard has lost in the tournament so far, after losing a set to Nicholas Jarry in the third round.
Alcars ventured into the front yard more often from the second set on, using drop volleys to great effect. The world number 1 took more shots and pulled the Italian into the net more frequently.
Alcaraz’s superior touch of the net and his ability to strike either wing helped him lead the game. Berrettini often chose to play slices from his back, allowing the Spaniard enough time to dictate the terms of his shots and dropped volleys.
Al Karez managed to get a decisive break of serve in each of the last three sets to ease him to victory. He had 16 break points in the match, due to Berrettini’s weaker serve in the second game. The Italian managed to earn just 69% of the points on his second delivery, while Alcaraz managed a much better 70%.
