Punjab continued to grapple with the wrath of heavy monsoon rains, with reports of at least two people drowning in Nawanshahr, a family rescued from a village in Ludhiana, and nearly 4-5 feet of river water entering the buildings of the Punjab Police Training Academy in Jalandhar surfacing on the day. Monday
Punjab received at least 149.33 mm of rain in the last 48 hours – between July 8 and July 10 – which records show was the highest in at least one decade. Punjab usually receives about 169.4 mm of rainfall in the month of July.
It is unlikely that the state will get any respite anytime soon, the sources said, as massive amounts of water are being released into the Sutlej River from Ras Ropar, potentially creating a flood-like situation.
As per the details, the person who drowned on Monday has been identified as Vijay Kumar (18 years old), a resident of Bholiwal village in Balachore sub-district. The identity of the second missing youth has not been revealed, but the police believe that he may have been a resident of Rahon district, which falls under Nawanshahr subdivision.
Navanshahr Deputy Commissioner Navjot Singh Randhawa described the drowning as tragic and said that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the two youths who ignored the heavy flow of water in the Sutlej River while deciding to take a bath in it. . Randawa urged the locals, especially the youth, to be extra careful and avoid potential adventures when the flood-like situation continues in the area.
Elsewhere, in Jalandhar, a breach was reported at the ‘Dhussi Bandh’ (temporary bridge along the river) near Phillaur, causing water to gush from the Sutlej River to the Punjab Police Training Academy, in Phillaur, on Monday morning. Officials said that about 4-5 feet of river water flooded at least a dozen vehicles parked near the golf course, and several jaws were later placed to haul these vehicles and move them to a higher location.
Some areas near Dosi Bandh witnessed water entering homes after the breach, with residents of the area stating that they are living on their toes under the threat of flooding.
Reports said that around 3.08 lakh of water was flowing into Sutlej River near Phillaur Railway Bridge – towards Gidderpindi Railway Bridge – in the morning. The water level dropped to 2.45 lakh kozik in the evening around 5:00 pm.
Officials monitoring the situation said that about 1.50 lakh cosickes of water were released from the Ras Ropar works into the riverbed. In addition, there are several looms and local rivers along the way that fed extra water to the river as it moved from Ropar to Jalandhar, with the water measured at 2.45 lakh kosek near Vellore. According to the Department of Sanitation, a river can only hold 70,000 to 90,000 cups of water at a time.
Meanwhile, officials from the administrations of Jalandhar, Kapurtala and Nawanshahr districts have already started working to evacuate villages that could be hit by floods. Most of these villages are located within the ‘Dhussi Bandh’, or near the river bed. Some of them are located near the bridge, on the other side of the river bed.
