Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won last night’s Home Run Derby. He beat Mookie Betts, Julio Rodriguez (who set the record for the Derby with 44 home runs in one innings) and Randy Arozarena by hitting his record final innings run with 25 balls long.
Born in Canada (Montreal) before living in the Dominican Republic.
An ESPN graphic notes Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as the “Cuban-born HR Derby Champion”. Born in Canada (Montreal) before living in the Dominican Republic.
After his victory, a celebration ensued. ESPN, which was reviewing the event, ran a graphic that said Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was the second-ever Cuban League Champion. There’s just one problem: The Toronto Blue Jays star isn’t from Cuba.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr no From Cuba, as ESPN’s victory graphic would suggest. He’s from the Dominican Republic, as evidenced by his participation in their national team during the World Baseball Classic in the spring.
Ironically, this was an easy mistake to catch. Guerrero is not the second Cuban Derby Champion, but he is the second Home Run Derby winner of his family. It was also won by his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr.
This means that the two stars will be of the same nationality and if Yoenis Cespedes is the only Cuban victor, it will not be Guerrero Jr. or Sr. from that country.
Additionally, Vlad Jr. was born in Canada while his father, ironically, was playing for the Blue Jays. Either way, neither the family nor the sweeper himself are from Cuba.
