Officials from the institute said that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi performed its first live liver donation surgery on Tuesday.
The surgery was performed on a patient with liver cirrhosis, officials said, adding that the patient’s wife was the donor.
The surgery was carried out following a decision taken by the institute in this regard in March and the formation of an eight-member committee chaired by Dr. Pranjal Modi, Vice Chancellor of Transplant Sciences, Gujarat University. The first surgery was headed by Dr. Modi and assisted by a team of doctors from the institute.
“The patient is a 50-year-old resident of Assam who was suffering from liver failure and end-stage cirrhosis. His wife donated part of her liver,” an official said.
“As of now, the patient and the donor are doing well. However, these procedures are associated with very high post-operative complications. A doctor who was part of the surgery said.
A living-donor liver transplant is a surgical procedure in which part of the liver is transplanted from a healthy person into another. Currently, living donor liver transplants in private hospitals can cost between 22 and 25 rupees. “In AIIMS, the cost is between Rs 11-15 lakh. For poor patients, we are also approaching the Ministry of Health for funding.”
