Another strike looms in Hollywood.
If lengthy talks between the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Motion Picture and Television Producers Alliance fail by midnight in LA, 160,000 actors will join the already staggering writers in picket lines Thursday.
En route to negotiations last month, Hollywood talent was looking to improve wages, working conditions, health benefits and pensions, as well as create sandboxes for the use of artificial intelligence in future TV and movie productions.
The Actors Union accepted a request from studios and broadcast services on Tuesday to meet with federal mediators in a final push to hammer out a new contract agreement, but members said they were still willing to drop sets if negotiations failed. The union has already granted one extension to her contract, which was originally set to expire on July 1.
SAG-AFTRA disputed reports that AMPTP filed for mediation after an emergency meeting Monday with several top Hollywood executives. The union said media reports had been published before it was informed that the producers were seeking mediation.
“We will not be distracted from negotiating in good faith to secure a fair and just agreement with the expiry of our agreement,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement on Tuesday. “We are committed to the negotiation process and will explore and exhaust every possible opportunity to strike a deal, but we are not confident that the employers have any intention of compromising in order to reach an agreement.”
“AMPTP has abused our trust and damaged the respect we have for them in the process,” the SAG-AFTRA statement continued. “We will not be manipulated by this cynical ploy of engineering an extension when companies have more than enough time to strike a fair deal.”
SAG-AFTRA’s comments come as damning reports surfaced about tactics studio producers are allegedly planning against the now-troubled Writers Guild of America — namely, that producers don’t plan to try to negotiate with writers for months. According to reports, producers expect workers to be underpaid They will run out of money and possibly lose their homes They are forced to come to the bargaining table.
The writers had been on strike for two months, which led to a number of unfinished projects with scripts pausing their production.
