To make the performance of officials in the Department of Roads and Buildings (R&B) more “effective, timely and qualitative”, Prime Minister Bhupendra Patel Wednesday ordered the rationalization and restructuring of districts. With that, Patel reorganized the control and supervision structure of the department into three regions of the state – North Gujarat, South Gujarat and Saurashtra.
An official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office reads, “For more effective control and supervision of the state’s roads, in place of the current positions of Chief Engineer of State and Chief Engineer of Panchayat, three posts have been reorganized and restructured as Chief Engineer North Gujarat, Chief Engineer South Gujarat and Chief Engineer Saurashtra.”
These Senior Engineers will maintain their district roads in the state and the panchayats and will be responsible for the quality of work in their districts. Not only that, but they will have to prioritize the quality of the works by making visits to various businesses two days a week.”
The R&B division has appointed PR Pateliya, YM Chavda and JA Gandhi as the chief engineer for South Gujarat, Saurashtra and North Gujarat respectively. Wednesday’s order passed the same day. Delegated to the Gujarat State Vigilance Committee, Gandhi ordered his transfer to the new position with immediate effect.
According to the release, CM also decided to divide the national highway business into two parts – north and south. She added that the Council of Ministers issued instructions to evaluate and submit a report on how to involve experts of government engineering colleges in the technical review.
Patel also instructed to keep consistent records of the performance of the contractor and the project management consultant while conducting the annual review of the same. The statement stated that in cases of work that was discovered not to have been done properly, the procedures will be implemented in accordance with the rules quickly, effectively and in a timely manner.
The statement said that due to the significant increase in the R&B department’s budget, its business has also been greatly increased and widely extended.
CM, who heads the department, on Tuesday ordered the transfer of Secretary (R & B) SB Vasava.
