With the peak summer season in the state seeing power demand soaring to 27,000MW and a consequent spike in the cost of electricity, the Uttar Pradesh State Cabinet on Tuesday approved two ‘Obra D’ thermal power projects of 800MW each at a cost of 800MW each. 18,000 Crore in Sunbadra District.

Aiming to provide cheaper electricity to the people, the state’s first ‘supercritical’ thermal power plants, which will boost power generation capacity by 1,600 MW, have been approved at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

(Ultracritical power plants use advanced technology that operates at temperatures and pressures above the water critical point. The efficiency of these plants requires less coal consumption for the same amount of power generation.)

The first plant will be ready in 50 months (more than four years). The government will implement the projects in a 50:50 partnership with the NTPC power generator owned by the central government. While 30 percent of the shares will be awarded for the implementation of projects, the remaining 70 percent of the amount will be arranged from financial institutions.

Uttar Pradesh Power Minister, A. K. Sharma said, “During the summer, power demand reached 27,000 MW. NTPC.

After that, the matter was also taken up with the Chief Minister, and it was decided to make the Ubra and Anbara districts of the state the centers of power in the country.”

“Taking a step forward in this direction, the Cabinet today approved two 800MW Obra D power generation projects. The Obra D will be the first ‘ultra-critical’ thermal power projects in the state. It will be equipped with the latest technology requiring less coal consumption,” Sharma said. Thus providing cheaper energy to consumers.

According to the minister, although there are supercritical power plants in the state, Obra D will be the first supercritical thermal power plants with the latest technology and high efficiency to reduce the cost of energy production.

The minister said that the first unit of the project will be ready within 50 months while the second in 56 months, adding that 500 feddans of land have already been provided for the project and if necessary more land will be allocated.

Sharma added that these two thermal plants will contribute to about 25 percent of the current thermal power generation capacity of the state, which is about 7,000 megawatts. Once operational, the minister said, electricity will likely be reduced by Re 1 per unit. Right now, we buy electricity for Rs 5.5 per unit. After the stations are ready for operation, the price will be reduced by 1 riyal per unit i.e. 4.79 rupees per unit.”
