Officials confirmed that vehicular traffic on the Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway (National Highway 5) had resumed on Tuesday but was restricted to one lane after the landslide.

A wrecked highway, partially destroyed houses and a calmer river – these were the scenes from the Manali foothills on Wednesday morning. Drone footage captured the devastation caused by the floods, which washed away many bridges and cars, and claimed many human lives.

However, it appeared from the video that the rage was finally over, as the clouds parted and patches of blue sky appeared.

Officials confirmed that vehicular traffic on the Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway (National Highway 5) had resumed on Tuesday but was restricted to one lane after the landslide. Both Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway and Chandigarh-Manali National Highway have been temporarily closed due to landslides.

Although a part of Manali-Chandigarh highway near Six Mile area of Mandi was affected by landslide, partial connectivity has now been restored. However, the highway is still closed in some sections. The highway closure stranded a large number of commuters, including tourists, in the state’s Mandi district for several hours.

While speaking to news agency ANI, Neha, a tourist from Ludhiana in Punjab said, “…we want to go home. We were scheduled to go back on Sunday but we are stuck due to floods.”

Another tourist, Sanjeev Arora, says, “We have been here in Manali since July 5th. The main path is damaged. We have been trying to come back for the past two days. Internet and electricity services are down…”

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Soko announced that partial connectivity between Manali Expressway and Chandigarh has been restored. More than 2,500 vehicles carrying stranded tourists have been launched from Kullu and Manali via Ott. He took to his official Twitter account to inform the public, saying, “I am personally stationed at Kullu tonight supervising the evacuations and restoration.”

Furthermore, he assured everyone that all the tourists were safe and would reach their destinations by tomorrow evening, as long as the weather was still favourable.
