The Indian Secular Front, which is emerging as a force in the Muslim enclaves of West Bengal, did well in its stronghold of Bhangar (South 24 Parganas district) in the panchayat elections, the result of which was announced on Tuesday.
The allied CPC(M) and Anti-Land Acquisition Committee gave the ruling Congress party in Trinamool state an intense fight in the area.
Bhangar witnessed, on polling day, incidents of intimidation, immunization of opposition candidates and voters, sieges of villages, loss of opposition agents, and the throwing of improvised bombs. In the run-up to the campaign, Bhangar was one of the hotbeds of violence as three people were killed there.
Out of the total 218 seats of the 10-gram panchayat of Bhangar-II block, TMC won out of 86 without a contest. Out of the 132 seats that went to the polls, the Transitional Military Council won 63, the Internal Security Forces 43, the Jumi Gibika Bastutantra Purebesh Roja Commission 18, and the CPIM 7 while an independent candidate won 1 seat.
They prevented us from submitting nominations from 86 seats. We have filed a case in this regard in Calcutta High Court. If we get a ruling in our favour, We will win a majority of 86 seats as well.”
The TMC knew they would lose if the elections were held democratically. So they unleashed terror from the start of the nomination process. The opposition has done well wherever it has overcome terrorism and violence. Bhangar results show who the people voted for,” said ISF MLA of Bhangar Naushad Siddiqui.
However, TMC leader Arap Islam said, “We won nine out of every 10 gram panchayats. It doesn’t matter if we lose some seats.”
