Minister for Cooperation Amit Shah on Wednesday asked NABARD to set targets for financing the agriculture and rural development sector for the next 25 years when India completes 100 years of independence.
In his speech on the occasion of the 42nd Founding Day of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Minister said that all employees of the organization should be involved in setting goals.
Shah said NABARD, which is engaged in financing and refinancing development activities in rural India, should set its targets keeping in mind its past performance and future requirements. He also emphasized the need for cooperation among cooperative organizations to promote rural development.
Shah said that a nation with 65 percent rural population cannot prosper without Nappard. “Today a stage has come when we cannot imagine the rural economy without Nappard,” he said, referring to the achievements of the organization which has played a major role in financing agricultural development and rural infrastructure.
The Minister also commended the work NABARD is doing in promoting Self Help Groups (SHGs) and supporting villages to become self-reliant. NABARD came into existence on 12th July 1982 by transferring the agricultural credit functions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the refinancing functions of the Agricultural Refinance and Development Corporation (ARDC).
