About 200 Swiggy’s delivery associates on Tuesday staged a protest at the GMDC Ground in Ahmedabad, demanding an end to what they described as their “exploitation”. The protesters said they had gathered from different parts of the state.
Jai Kumar, 52, who heads the Swiggy Riders Association, said: “Our main requirement is the standardization of the price tag in Gujarat, which is currently being done based on demand in every district. We want it to be the same everywhere, no matter where. Another requirement is that they (Swiggy) either have to stop the slot system or keep it open all day.”
According to the slot system, the delivery partner is supposed to work two four-hour shifts a day. Kumar stressed that the online food delivery company charges penalties for the entire day’s earnings even if riders miss a single spot. He added, “With this protest, we hope that our demands will be approved by the company or at least that we will find a compromise solution to the problems we are facing.”
The demonstrators also demanded fair compensation for the canceled orders. Delivery partners said passengers would have to pay out of pocket if an order was canceled midway through. They are also seeking additional compensation for going to a different location than the one mentioned in the application, and insurance for all among other demands.
Azad Patel, 31, a worker at the business, accused the company of manipulating the internet system to take advantage of them. He said they had “screenshots as evidence” to back up their claims. He added that the company had closed the accounts of people involved in the protest, creating pressure to end the uproar.
While Bhavesh Solanki, Head of City Operations at Swiggy, Ahmedabad, declined to comment on the matter, the company stated in a statement, “We understand the inconvenience caused by the impact in certain areas of the city. We are currently in direct contact with our delivery executives to quickly resolve the situation.” We are working hard to resume our services as soon as possible.”
