Wanindu Hasaranga and Ashleigh Gardner have won the ICC Player of the Month for June 2023 in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.
The all-rounder bowler has taken 22 wickets in seven World Cup qualifying matches. He averaged 12.90 per wicket, and scored career best figures of 6 for 24 against the United Arab Emirates. He played a key role in Sri Lanka’s qualifying victory in Zimbabwe.
Hasaranga became the second bowler after Waqar Younis to claim three five-wicket hauls in consecutive matches in ODIs.
Talking about winning the ICC Player of the Month award for June, Hasaranga said, as quoted by the ICC’s official website:
“I am very happy with this award, and it comes at such an important moment for Sri Lankan cricket, now that we have reached the Cricket World Cup in India. It is a matter of honor and gratitude to be named the ICC Men’s Tournament Player of the Month.”
Ashley Gardner picked up 12 wickets in the one-off Test against England at Trent Bridge. The off-spinner scored the second-best bowling figures among women in Test cricket history (12/165). Her return of 8/66 in the second innings helped Australia beat their Ashes opposition by 89 runs.
Garner also added 40 runs with the bat in the first innings, sharing a stand of 77 with centurion Annabelle Sutherland (137*).
Expressing her gratitude for receiving the Player of the Month award, Gardner said:
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me as their ICC Women’s Player of the Month. Winning the Ashes Test match at Trent Bridge was a special moment for our team and I’m glad I was able to contribute to the win.”

Australia’s Travis Head and Zimbabwe’s opening Shaun Williams were the other nominees for the awards in the men’s category.
Meanwhile, England captain Tammy Beaumont and West Indies Hayley Matthews were the other favorites alongside Gardner.
