A final decision on the issue is likely to be made on Thursday. The Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, with wrestling bouts starting on October 4.
A source with the Special Committee said the women’s and Greco-Roman trials will be held on July 22, while the men’s freestyle competition will be held on July 23 in New Delhi.
It was learned that the national championship and ranking series winners along with the under-18 and under-23 first- and second-place finishers would be eligible to compete in the trials.
The decision was made after the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced last weekend that it had granted a one-week extension for the IOA to send in the final list of wrestlers who will compete in the Asian Games. The original deadline for submitting entries is July 15th.
It was learned that the members of the Ad Hoc Committee had contacted the wrestlers, asking them to confirm their willingness to participate in the Asian Games trials.
In the event that they are not fit enough by next weekend to compete in the Asian Games trials, they may be given the option to participate in the trials for the World Championships in September, which will be the first Olympic qualifying event. The deadline for submission of entry lists for the World Championships is August 15.
Bajrang is currently in Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, where she will train until August 5. Finch is in Hungary, where she will compete in the ranking series on Friday in the 55kg weight class instead of the 53kg class in which she usually competes. As per her original plan, Vinesh is set to return at the end of this month. Meanwhile, Sakshi is training in the USA.
The wrestlers have been off the rug for much of the year due to protests against Brij Bhuchan, accusing him of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.
Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Brij Bhushan and he was arraigned before the Delhi Court on 18 July.
