A restaurant in Bihar has been fined Rs 3,500 for not serving Sambar along with Dosa in Buxar district of Bihar.

A restaurant serving south Indian dishes in Bihar and Buxar landed in hot water due to not serving Sambar with Dosa. The restaurant was fined 3,500 rupees for not serving Sambar with “Special Masala Dosa” priced at 140 rupees.

A customer, after not being introduced to Sambar, a soup prepared using lentils, vegetables and spices, along with “Special Masala Dosa”, dragged the restaurant into the consumer’s yard. The Consumer Tribunal noted that “mental, physical and economic” suffering resulted from Sambar’s refusal of the petitioner.

According to a India today Report, the incident occurred on August 15, 2022, when Manish Gupta, on his birthday, decided to treat himself to Namak Restaurant ‘Special Masala Dosa’. Reached the restaurant and ordered a takeaway platter worth 140 rupees.

Upon reaching home, the lawyer is disappointed not to find Sambar at Dosa’s side. An angry Gupta returns to the restaurant and asks about the missing Sambar. The restaurant owner did not take Gupta’s complaint seriously. The restaurant owner sneered: “Do you want to buy the entire restaurant for 140 rupees?”

The lawyer then proceeded to serve a legal notice to the restaurant. When there was no response, he filed a complaint with the district consumer commission.

Eleven months later, Ved Prakash Singh Consumer Commission board member and member Varun Kumar, noticing the “mental, physical and economic” suffering of the petitioner, Manish Gupta, found the restaurant guilty.

The restaurant was fined 3,500 rupees. The fine was imposed in two parts – Rs 1,500 as litigation cost and Rs 2,000 as basic fine.

Namak Restaurant was given 45 days to pay the fine. The court also said that if payment is not made on time, the restaurant will have to pay 8% interest on the fine amount.
