Higher Education and Technical Minister Chandrakant Patil said on Wednesday that the responsibility of the hostel residents should be taken by the guards as their parents.
The minister’s remarks came after the inauguration of a workshop for youth hostel guards run by the Department of Higher and Technical Education in Mumbai.
The workshop was organized on the recommendations of the committee formed after the rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl in a South Mumbai hostel.
After a full day workshop focused on educating hostel wardens on various aspects of ensuring a safe environment for resident students, wardens are now required to submit proposals for safety requirements in their hostels to the department with immediate effect.
The workshop was led by the Director of Higher Education, Dr. Shailendra Deolanker, who also chairs the committee that conducted the security audit of the hostels.
