Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard gives his take on Mason Mount’s move to Manchester United

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has weighed in on Mason Mount’s move to Manchester United.
The Chelsea academy product left Stamford Bridge this summer to join the Red Devils in a deal worth £60m (including add-ons). Mount has less than 12 months left on his contract at the Blues and has reportedly been unable to make any progress extending his contract with his former club.
Upon signing for United, he was given the number 7 shirt for the club, with many fans dissenting from the decision. The player faces a tough challenge to prove his mettle at Old Trafford.
It seems his former boss, Lampard, believes the 24-year-old England international will serve up Erik ten Hag’s side.
Lampard told the CEO Diary Podcast:
“I think he’s a great signing. He’s a complicated signing and at the end of the day, he has a year left on his contract (with Chelsea). So in terms of what he brings to Manchester United, it won’t just be what brings Mason, he’ll bring a lot of talent, but he’ll go up (up) and (Raises) levels.”
he added:
“Don’t get me wrong, the ceiling increase is already there with Bruno Fernandes, (Marcus) Rashford, Casemiro…he’d fit right in.”
Lampard believes Mount has the mentality to match a team hungry for success.
“If you’re trying to build a team mentality for a team, players who will give everything with their talents, it fits with it. I’ve seen the alternative reaction to what, ‘Why are you paying this for him? ‘ Mason Mount would be a great player there, in my opinion.”
Lampard discusses Mount’s exit from Chelsea after 18 years at the club
Mount joined Chelsea as a six-year-old in 2005. He spent 12 seasons with the development and youth team before being promoted to the senior setup. In his four seasons as a senior player at Chelsea, he won the club’s Player of the Year award on two occasions.
Overall, he scored 33 goals and 37 assists in 195 games with the Blues. He had a sub-par outing last season, scoring three goals and providing six assists in 35 appearances for Chelsea.
As a player who came through the academy, Mount was expected to stay at the club for much longer by most fans. Lampard echoed the same idea but made it clear that he understood the player’s decision.
He said, “I think it’s possible that Mason could have envisioned a couple of years ago that he was going to stay at Chelsea for much of his career. I think just the circumstances, the placement of his contract, I know he has a great love for Chelsea.”
he added:
“In modern times too, I think more than ever, players move, and I don’t think the challenge of moving now has come. For Mason personally, it’s a good challenge for him, I’ll do that.” It would have been central to that but that didn’t happen.”
Mount made his Chelsea debut under Lampard in 2019.
