LT Marg Police have booked four persons including two Chinese nationals for allegedly detaining and attempting to extort money from a counterfeit jeweler in Mumbai. Police said the incident occurred in March in Yiwu, central China’s Zhejiang Province, but the case was registered on Wednesday as the plot to commit the crime took place in south Mumbai.
Confirming the development, a senior police officer said the case was registered after which one of the accused who was identified as Vipendra Rajpurohit (25) was arrested.
Police said the complainant, Hitesh Kumar Malli, 25, along with two other people, went to China on March 17.
An officer said, “Mali is a counterfeit jeweler and because they get these goods cheaper in Yiwu, they often go there to buy.”
However, after their arrival in China, Rajpurohit allegedly informed his accomplice who was identified as Chand Shah who went with two Chinese nationals to their hotel in Yiwu and locked them in their room.
An officer said, “One of the staff of Mali, who joined him recently, took some goods worth Rs 36,000 from Rajpurohit a few months ago and did not pay for it.”
The officer added, “Rajpurohit believed that the employee was now Malli’s business partner because of making a plan and getting money from him.”
The complainant refused to pay them, which led to the 25-year-old businessman and two others being locked in a room for two days. But somehow the three managed to escape from the hotel and reach Mumbai on March 20.
“As the three often visit Yiwu to buy imitation jewelry, they were afraid that a false complaint would be registered against them in China or that they would be beaten when they went to Yiwu again for not filing a police complaint,” said an officer.
But on Wednesday they reported the matter at LT Marg Police Station after which Rajpurohit was tracked down and arrested.
