A joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the Kutch (West) Police have arrested five Punjab men after seizing heroin worth Rs 2.10 crore from their vehicle late Wednesday.
Dramatic scenes played out when the police opened fire on the car as the accused started driving the car in reverse in an attempt to flee after being spotted by the police near a hotel in Madhapar village on the outskirts of Bhuj town around 5:30 pm on Wednesday.
“We got intelligence that five men from Punjab were trying to sell heroin in Kutch and that they might have been carrying firearms. So we responded by including armed policemen in our team. While they were trying to escape, we fired five bullets into their car and blew off the rear wheel of the car,” Vinod Bhola said. , the superintendent of police at the Kutch (West) Indian Express Police on Thursday.
Police said two of the suspects abandoned the car and fled, but were eventually pursued and arrested. The other three have also been arrested. Bhola said that the police found 420 grams of heroin with a market value of Rs 2.10 crore. “However, the accused were not found to be carrying any firearms,” the police inspector said, adding that one of the five is accused in the Punjab Arms Act case.
The five accused have been identified as Ranjit Singh Jagir Singh Jat (30), Sartas Singh Raspal Singh Jat (42), Daler Singh Joginder Singh Jat (47), Gurbaiz Singh Alvinder Singh Jat (34) and Harpreet Singh Jasvinder Singh Jat (27) . While Ranjeet Singh, Sartaz Singh, Daler Singh and Gurbaiz Singh are residents of Margindpura village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab, Harpreet Singh is a resident of Garyala village in the same district.
The Madhapar Police detained the five under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act before they were formally arrested.
