Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Jari Tonon expects a tough challenge from Russia’s Shamil Jasanov, who said his grappling skills should not be overlooked.
The two top-tier featherweight fighters meet in a joint fight for ONE Fight Night 12 on Prime Video on July 14 in Bangkok. The bout is one of nine matches shown at the event, which takes place at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok and is available for free to Prime Video subscribers in North America.
Heading into high-profile competition, Gary Tunnon said he matched well with Shamil Jasanov, who he said he admired for his mixed martial arts combat.
The Lion Killer participated in ONE Championship in an interview:
“So, I think it’s a great synergy of style to fight someone who is another really tough grappler. It’s not proven in terms of tough grappling in the wrestling world, but in the mixed martial arts world, for sure. It works its way there.”
Gary Tonon won his final bout in January, sending fellow American Johnny Nunez into submission in the opening round with a Kimura.
The victory kick-started his renewed push for the world featherweight title which was now in the possession of China’s Tang Kai.
Meanwhile, Shamil Jasanov displayed his submission skills in his ONE Championship debut last October, causing a naked chokehold on South Korean superstar Kim Jae-woong in the first round.
Injury delayed his scheduled return earlier this year, but he is now fit and ready to resume his campaign in the featherweight division.
