USC quarterback Caleb Williams is a projected #1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and is one of the most talented players of all time. He was getting comparisons to one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in MVP Patrick Mahomes.
Former quarterback and celebrity coach Jordan Palmer spoke to Sports Illustrated that they look alike. There seem to be parts of Williams’ game that he likes more than Mahomes.
“I just think Caleb is more athletic than Patrick,” Palmer said. And he’s a better runner. So yeah, I think he’s similar, except Caleb is an offensive runner. He’s attacking defense.

Caleb Williams is one of the best quarterback prospects since Andrew Luck. He’s entering his third year of college football, his second with the USC Trojans, and has shown the skills to be an outstanding quarterback. Williams is a Heisman Trophy winner who goes 469-for-711 (66.0 completion percentage) for 6,449 yards with 63 touchdowns to just nine interceptions.
His ability to throw the ball puts him in the elite category, but his ability to scramble and run the ball makes him stand out. He ran the ball 192 times for 824 yards (4.3 yards per carry) with 16 rushing touchdowns as well.
Comparing him to Patrick Mahomes feels valid because both midfielders can throw footballs to the best of their ability. It’s not fair to compare Williams to Patrick Mahomes now, but looking at his college stats shows Williams is quite a bit better.
Mahomes played three seasons for Texas Tech before being drafted and had 8.3 yards per pass attempt (Williams has 9.1). Mahomes also threw for 93 touchdowns on 29 interceptions, while Williams showed the ability to surpass him in both figures.
It might seem foolish to think because Patrick Mahomes is so good he’s the best quarterback in the NFL right now, but Caleb Williams could be even better.
