Six months after the opening of the Shivamoga Airport, commercial operations are likely to start from August 11, Industry Minister M. M. Patil said on Thursday.
This will be the first airport in Karnataka to be operated by the state government. The minister, after a review meeting on airports in the state, said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had handed them over to the Karnataka State Corporation for Industry Development and Infrastructure for operation and maintenance.
“Since the operations at the airport will start from August 11, all preparations will be done by July 20,” he said. Among the pending works are the commissioning of an ambulance and other essential vehicles for the airport, the opening of a coffee shop, and a few appointments of technical and non-technical staff.
The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 27 this year, coinciding with the birthday celebrations of BJP Parliamentary Committee member PBS Yeduriappa, who hails from Shivamuga district.
In the last six months, the airport has generated revenue of Rs 12 lakh as 20 aircraft landed at the airport during the assembly elections recently held in the state. The airport is located on an area of 662 acres and was built at a cost of Rs 450 crore.
Operations at the airport will begin on August 11 if all goes according to plan. Patel added that a flight from Bengaluru will be the first to land at the airport that day.
