In what could relieve the flood-like situation in the national capital and villages of Haryana in the coming days, the water level of Hatnikund Dam located on the Yamuna River in Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar district has seen a sharp drop in the river.

Water from this barrage usually takes 72 hours to reach Delhi, but officials believe it may have arrived earlier this time due to the large volume of water in the river. According to the officials, the low rainfall in the hills is the main reason behind the low water level of the Hatnikund River.

An official of the State Irrigation Department told The Indian Express that the water level in the barrier was measured at 1.4 lakh cucs at noon on Thursday while it was 1.62 lakh cucs at 10 am. At 11 am on Tuesday, 3.59 lakh cusecs of water were shot into the Yamuna River from the barrage which was the highest mark of the season so far.

However, the water level of the Yamuna at the Akhla Barrage continues to rise at a dangerous rate. About 3.48 lakhs of cob water is being discharged into the barrage currently, which is much higher than the expected discharge level.

Given the rising water level, the Haryana government has already warned officials to avoid a flood-like situation in Karnal, Panipat and Sonipat districts. The official said that due to the high level of flood waters near Yamuna, the army was deployed in Tabu Kamalpur village in Yamuna Nagar on Thursday.

The Yamuna River breached the danger mark in Delhi in August 2019, after Haryana released a record 8.28 lakh gallons of water into the river from Hatnikund Dam. Before that, the highest water record for Yamuna in Hathnikund Barrage was 8.06 lakh cusecs in June 2013.

With the water level of the Yamuna River flowing at a high level, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday sought center intervention to ensure it does not rise further. “There has been no rain in Delhi for the past three days. The water levels in Yamuna are rising not because of the rains, but because of the large volumes of water being released by Haryana at Hatnikund Barrier,” CM Kejriwal wrote in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Noting that news of floods in the capital would not send a good message before the G20 summit, CM Kejriwal urged the Shah to release water from the Hatnikund hail in Haryana at a controlled speed.

However, officials in Haryana say the AAP government should be cautious in issuing data regarding the release of water from Hatnikund Dam adding that there is no option to store water in a shower but to release it further.

Satbir Singh Kadian, Engineer General of Irrigation and Water Resources Department of Haryana, insisted, “Hathnikund Barrage (formerly Tagiwala Barrage) is not a storage dam, but a diversion structure. Storage cannot be done in volleys and any flows that come in the Yamuna are bound to reach Delhi.” Unnecessary confusion is being created that Haryana releases water. The truth is that there is no way the water can be stopped in Hatnikund and people need to speak the truth. The state of denial or blaming Haryana for some brownie points must stop.As if water cannot be held back in a hail It is real, and so is the suffering of thousands of people.”
