The government’s DMK master scheme for poor women, which will provide them with a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 per month, is expected to be launched on September 15 on the birthday of former Chief Minister CN Annadurai.
The ruling party had promised Kalainar Magalir Orimai Thugai or Kalainar Women’s Right to Help with its manifesto during the 2021 state assembly elections. Even actor Kamal Hassan’s party, Makal Ndi Mayam, has vowed to deliver the scheme.
The Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme aims to give women living below the poverty line a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 in their bank accounts.
Former Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan announced the scheme in the 2023-24 budget and also allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the purpose. A few days ago, the government issued an order detailing who can benefit from the programme.
The order said more than 1 crore women will benefit from the scheme.
The beneficiary needs to provide the Aadhaar number, name, ration card number, marital status, phone number, residence details such as living in a private or rented house, neighborhood, electricity connection number, bank account number, bank and branch name, said a senior government official.
In order to take advantage of the benefits as a beneficiary, a woman must live below the poverty line and earn less than 2.5 lakh rupees per annum, consume less than 3,600 units of energy per annum, be neither employed by the central or state government nor own more land. From 2.5 acres.
The government has also said that the beneficiary will receive the application form at their doorstep, which they can submit there and must register their fingerprints.
A few days ago, the Karnataka state Congress government launched a similar plan as part of the electoral promise. While Tamil Nadu would give 1,000 rupees per month to poor women, Karnataka increased this amount to 2,000 rupees per month.
Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have already implemented a similar scheme in their states and the Punjab government has also started work to introduce the scheme in the state.
Guaranteed income schemes are often dismissed as being too expensive to implement on a large scale, but many cities are trying them out among small subsets of their population.
Giving people even a small amount of money can go a long way toward bridging the gap between survival and prosperity. The largest guaranteed income pilot program in the United States is currently underway in Chicago, with 500 families receiving $500 per month, with no strings attached, for 12 months.
