Several senior BJP leaders have called for the imposition of Article 355 in the state, citing the deaths of more than 34 people during the rural elections.

The Trinamool Congress and the BJP on Thursday sparred over the latter’s demand to impose Article 355 of the constitution in West Bengal over the poll-related panchayat violence, which the ruling party claimed was a “plot to harm the state”. Section 355 states that it is the duty of the Federation to protect the States from internal disturbances and external aggressions.

Several senior BJP leaders have called for the imposition of Article 355 in the state, citing the deaths of more than 34 people during the rural polling process since last month.

“Free and fair elections will only be possible if Article 355 is imposed in the state. The law and order situation in the state has completely failed,” BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar said.

BJP MP Koch Behar, BJP MP Nesith Pramanik and Home Affairs Home Union said the junta government must ensure that the violence stops after the elections.

It is a democratically elected government. But it is a shame that such demands are put forward by a section of the people and from different sides that Article 355 is imposed in the state.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that 19 people, mostly members of the Transitional Military Council, had died in election-related violence since the election date was announced on June 8.

However, police sources put the death toll at 38 but agree that at least 60 percent of those who lost their lives belonged to the TMC.

Responding to the request, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “It is the Bharatiya Janata Party that is trying to spoil the atmosphere of the state so that they can act on their ploy to enforce Article 355 in the state.” killed in the state. The ruling Trinamool Congress scored a massive victory in the rural polls in West Bengal, garnering all the Zilla Parisads and winning the majority of seats in Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat.
