World number one and number one Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz defeated sixth seed Holger Rohn of Denmark 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on Wednesday, July 12th. Youngest player to qualify for the last four at Wimbledon in the last 15 years.
Alcaraz will take on third seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia in what promises to be an entertaining semi-final on Friday 14 June. clash.
Their encounters are tied at 1-1 at the moment, but the Spaniard remains a slightly better player on the grass. However, Medvedev’s superior serve could help him win some easy points, which could make all the difference in the end.
On that note, let’s look at two things that stood out in the quarter-final match between Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rohn.
#1. Carlos Alcaraz was the MVP of the net:
Alcaraz and Rune played falling shots at a reasonably high frequency to pull each other into the net. However, the Spaniard had the upper hand in those exchanges often with his superior touch and shooting skills.
Ron got a chance to break Alcaraz in the ninth game of the first set, as the latter trailed 0-30. However, the Spaniard saved himself with some confident tennis, including a daring shot.
The first set went into a tiebreak, which the Spaniard eventually won with a stunning winner.
# 2. Carlos Alcaraz returned very well in the match:
Alcaraz showed improvement in the rematch throughout the match. He hit several great rebounds to put Ron’s second serve under pressure. The Dane had the stronger backhand of the two, but Alcaraz’s superior defense, better forehand and impressive returns gave him the upper hand.
The Spaniard caught a break in both the second and third sets to cruise to a comfortable win. Ron couldn’t come back well nor was he able to break the Spaniard even once in the match.
Moreover, the Dane managed to rack up just 58% of points on his second serve, while Alcaraz managed 75%, and the stage is being set for a mouth-watering summit match between Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. This will be only the third time that the two highest ranked players have met on the court.
