The menace of doping has returned to haunt the Indian sports fraternity as several athletes, from US 400m champion Anjali Devi to Karanveer Singh, have failed doping tests.
The two were also withdrawn from the Asian Athletics Championships currently underway in Bangkok where India has already won a lot of medals.
This emerged a day after the National Anti-Doping Agency issued Indian wrestler Finch Phogat a notice for “apparent failure” to comply with anti-doping rules’ whereabouts requirements and given two weeks to respond.
The list of athletes who failed doping tests also includes last year’s Federation Cup gold medalist Kirpal Singh and Ira Dixitha lifter for the 2020 women’s 59kg national championship.
PTI has the list of suspended athletes as of January 1, 2023.
As per the list of suspended athletes from various sports, Anjali tested positive for GW1516. Kirpal came back with a positive result for Stanozolol, while Karanveer was found positive for Methandienone and SARMs Inobosarm.
The list also contains the names of National Youth Leverage Champion in 45 kg Anjali Patil, Khelo India University Games Champion in single-sculls Malak Singh, some judokas, several bodybuilders and weightlifters.
As far as Finch was concerned, she was one of the prominent faces of the protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Charan Singh, who was accused by the wrestlers of sexual harassment. Three failures per year are considered an anti-doping rule violation.
