GKIDS announced on Friday, July 14, 2023, that they have officially licensed Hayao Miyazaki’s upcoming feature film, The boy and the heron It will be released in North American theaters later this year. Additional sources have also mentioned the cast, staff, and plot synopsis for the upcoming film, all of which have yet to be announced as of this point.
This news day Boy and Heron It comes on the day of the film’s release in Japan, and opens simultaneously in both IMAX theaters and public theaters. The film is also shown in Japan in Dolby Atmos, Dolby Cinema, and DTS:X formats. It was previously announced that the film will not receive any trailers prior to its release, nor will it feature TV or press ads.
While important information about the cast, staff, and story was announced earlier today, there was unfortunately no mention of an international release for the film outside of North American theaters. As a result, it is currently unknown when Boy and Heron It will be screened in countries other than Japan and North America regions of the world.

According to the latest news, Boy and Heron The film is set in Japan during World War II, focusing on the protagonist, Mahito Maki. After losing his mother during the firebombing of TokyoMahito and his father move to the countryside where his father marries his mother’s pregnant sister. As Mahito struggles to adjust to his new life, he encounters a talking heron who convinces him to enter another world on the premise of meeting his mother again.
The voice of Soma Santoki, protagonist Mahito Maki, with Takuya Kimura said he makes a “special appearance” in the film. Other cast members whose roles have not been revealed as of this writing include Masaaki Suda, Ko Shibasaki, Imeon, Yoshino Kimura, Keiko Takeshita, Jun Fubuki, Sawako Agawa, Karen Takizawa, Shinobu Otake, Jun Kunimura, Kaoru Kobayashi, and Shohei Hino.
Miyazaki is credited with the film’s original work as well as his responsibilities as the film’s director and screenwriter. Takeshi Honda is the animation director, while Joe Hisaishi composed the film’s music. One of the four Studio Ghibli co-founders, Toshio Suzuki, is listed as a producer for the film. Kenshi Yonezu performs the theme song “Chikyugi”, which translates to “Globe”.
Miyazaki appears to have derived the film from Gainsborough Yoshino’s 1937 novel titled how do you live?which is also an alternate translation of the film’s title, Kimi-tachi wa Do Ikiru ka. Miyazaki also said that Yoshino’s novel is a story that makes a lot of sense for his movie’s protagonist, Mahito.
