Former MLS striker Bradley Wright-Phillips said he was surprised by Lionel Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami.
Messi is set to be revealed as a player for the American club on July 16. The Argentine joins the club as a free agent after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired on June 30. Where the Argentine captain’s move to raise the level of the league is being promoted.
Wright-Phillips, who has played for clubs like New York Red Bulls, Columbus Crew, and Los Angeles FC, and scored 114 goals in MLS, spoke about Messi’s move to the US (via HITC):
“My first reaction to Messi going out was that I couldn’t believe it. Honestly, until now until I see him run out on the MLS pitch, I can’t really fathom what it would be like. It’s hard to imagine. Even now it doesn’t feel real to me. It’s Messi!”
Lionel Messi played with major European clubs such as Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain during his career. He is the all-time leading scorer in Europe’s top five leagues, with 496 goals.
Thus, the move to Inter Miami came as a surprise to many, including Wright-Phillips.
Lionel Messi is perhaps the biggest superstar to move to Major League Soccer. The Argentine captain’s move caused quite a stir in the United States when he arrived at Inter Miami.
Billionaire Jorge Mas, co-owner of the club, claimed that Messi would move up the league. He added that the Major League Soccer could become among the three best leagues in the world with Messi. Mas told El Pais:
“In 2019, we started thinking about how we can bring him (to the club). Messi can turn MLS into the second or third best league in the world. I think he will want to make his mark, and he will be able to do that outside of football.”
Messi will be joined by former Barcelona team mate Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami. Meanwhile, former Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino was recently appointed as the club’s new manager.
