A woman was killed and her four daughters injured after part of the roof collapsed on them in Thane, Maharashtra state, on Friday, while another woman died in a separate incident in the area when a concrete canopy fell on her, officials said.
The first incident happened to the 46-year-old woman and her daughters at around 4.15 am in a residential building in Patan Bandar district of Utan town, while the second incident occurred in Bhiwandi in the afternoon, they said.
“In the first incident, the victim, Sunita Borges, died instantly when plaster fell on her from the ceiling of her apartment, while her four daughters in the age group of 12 to 25 were injured,” an official from the district disaster management told Cell.
The official said firefighters from the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation removed the rubble and evacuated the house.
He said that the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, adding that an accidental death had been recorded.
The official said that a 55-year-old woman lost her life in the Bhiwandi accident.
“A window awning of a building collapsed on the woman while she was standing under it. The accident occurred at around 1.20 pm in Khediber district, on the outskirts of Bhiwandi.”
The official said that the body of the victim, who was identified as Shahnaz Zahir Ansari, was taken to the Indira Gandhi Hospital after death, and the matter is being investigated.
