Jailed political gangster Muktar Ansari has been booked on charges of threatening a witness in a murder case, police said.
Police said Ansari, a five-time MLA who has been lodged in Banda District Jail, has been booked under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in Azamgarh Kotwali.
Raj Kumar Singh in Kotwali said Ashok Singh, a resident of Mau, visited the police station and lodged a complaint against Ansari, accusing him of threatening the witness in the murder case. “The plaintiff alleged that Ansari threatened a witness to the videoconference,” the SHO said.
Azamgarh Superintendent of Police Shailendra Lal said security has been provided for the witness in the murder case which took place in 2014. Police said the attackers shot dead Ram Iqbal and Bashu over a land dispute in Karwa area of Azamgarh. After the investigation, the police charged nine people, including Mukhtar.
