Two days after a Human skull recovered from Kalyansagarthe sacred water complex of the Tripurasundari Temple in Gomati district of Tripura, the temple authorities cordoned off the lake on Friday for 45 days and the police launched an investigation.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, the chief priest of the Tripurasundari temple, Chandan Chakraborty, said, “The temple authorities decided to do a special pooja purification after 45 days to ensure that the water does not harm anyone.”

Chakraborty added, “The scriptures say that any impure body of water must remain untouched for six months before being purified. For frequently used bodies of water, the time can be reduced to 45 days. We follow the rituals.”

He added that a similar incident occurred in the Tripurasundari temple two years ago when a devotee died after losing control when he went for a swim in the lake. “We followed a similar procedure thereafter,” said the chief priest, adding, “The temple will be fully operational and open to worshipers in the meantime.”

Gomati District Police Superintendent Ajit Pratap Singh said a detailed investigation has been launched as per government instructions to uncover the source of the human skull which was found floating on the waters of Kalyansagar on Wednesday.

While the police initially said that it appeared someone had taken the skull from elsewhere and dumped it in the temple’s water basin, speculation is rife among locals, businessmen and devotees that the tantric practitioners who came to pray at the temple may have done so. I accidentally left the skull.

Matabari MLA Abhishek Debroi said he feels the Kalyansagar water basin should be enclosed with a concrete wall, leaving the bathing steps or bathing steps open for people to take a holy dip or perform prayers. He said such a move would prevent unwanted disturbances. Debroy also said that he has pushed for a plan with the local department to install CCTV cameras in and around Kalyansagar to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Located 55 km south of Agartala, Tripurasundari Temple is believed to be one of the holiest Hindu shrines in the country. The temple is built on top of a hill that looks like a turtle’s back. According to the Tripura Rajmala, Royal Chronicle of the Manikya Kings of Tripura, Maharaja Dhania Manikya Bahadur built the temple in 1501 after receiving the ‘Swapnadish’ or divine injunction from the Supreme Mother or Adishakti in his dream.

The temple is a center for the state government’s religious tourism department and sees more than two devotees and saints visit it every year on Diwali apart from the constant pursuit of tourists throughout the year.
