A video has emerged of Manchester United’s Mason Mount refusing to sign shirts after being persuaded by a few fans.
The England international signed for the Red Devils earlier this month for a fee of around £60m (including add-ons) from Chelsea. He picked up the number 7 shirt at the club, which was vacated following the unofficial exit of Cristiano Ronaldo in November.
Fans saw Mount for the first time in action against Manchester United on 12 July when the Red Devils beat Leeds United 2-0 in a friendly match in Norway. A video has since surfaced of Mount being alone in a car park and being goaded into autographing shirts by a group of fans.
The Englishman, who was wearing a United tracksuit, was heard to say (h/t SportBible):
“You know I didn’t sign it… Sorry guys.”
They didn’t stop there and continued to urge the 24-year-old to sign their shirt. Jabal replied:
“I haven’t signed for three days, so I don’t know why you guys come back so often.”
Mount played the first 45 minutes against Leeds United before being brought on in the second half along with his starting ten team mates.
Liverpool showed an early interest in Mason Mount after the end of last season when it became clear he wasn’t keen on extending his contract with Chelsea.
Once they were out of the running, Manchester United were the favorites to sign the Englishman. Despite having no competition for his signature, they were forced to shell out £60m for a player who was in the final year of his contract.
Providing his opinion on Mount’s move to Old Trafford was stunned, Paul Merson wrote for Sky Sports:
“I can’t believe only one team was behind Mount. He’s proven himself in the Premier League, before he was injured last season he was named to start for England and was the best player in a good Chelsea squad.
“If I support Manchester United, I would be more than happy to sign. He gives you energy, catches the ball, in the half turn, looks forward all the time. The kid is a fit player, a special player.”
There was a lot of speculation as to where Mount would play in Erik ten Hag’s system, considering Bruno Fernandes’ tenth place. However, the former Chelsea playmaker played in central midfield against Leeds, often stepping up to assist his teammates.
