A special court has referred the three railway officials accused in the Balasore train disaster to judicial custody, after the expiration of their period of remand by the CBI.
Section Chief (Signal) Engineer Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Muhammad Amir Khan and Technician Babu Kumar, who have been suspended by the Railways, were brought before the CBI Special Court on Friday after the end of their remand period.
The accused were arrested by the Central Bank of Iraq on July 7.
On July 7, the Special Court granted the defendants a five-day pre-trial detention period to the Central Bank of Iraq, which is investigating the case. Subsequently, on July 11, the court extended the pretrial detention period for another four days at the request of the investigation agency. .
The next date for the hearing is July 27.

While the CBI has not yet submitted its report on the case, the investigation report of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle, stated that the accident occurred due to “holes” in the signal circuit alteration.
As many as 293 people were killed and over 1,200 injured when the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district, and some of its derailed buses collided with the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, on June 2.
