Marking a major breakthrough in the treatment of heart disease in the city, a hospital in Pune recently used a suction catheter to remove a clot from a blocked coronary artery – a unique case for such a procedure used to remove blocked arteries.
The medical team at Sahyadri Hospital performed the procedure in May on a 62-year-old patient from Pune.
“He has no history of heart disease. However, when the patient was admitted to the hospital, he was experiencing severe chest pain and heavy sweating. Tests confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack caused by blockage of an artery with a blood clot,” said Dr. Abhijeet Palshekar, Director Cardiology, Sahyadri Super Specialty Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana for The Indian Express.
The cardiac surgeon and medical team used a suction catheter to perform a procedure called mechanical thrombectomy. Palshikar added: “The patient was discharged from the hospital on the third day after the operation and has now fully recovered.”
During the procedure, the catheter was carefully guided into the blocked area of the artery, and a special vacuum pump was used to suction out the clot. This resulted in a significant improvement in blood flow through the heart muscle, as evidenced by the myocardial redness score (MBG), according to an official statement from Sahyadri Hospital.
Doctors said that this innovative system, combined with a suction motor, effectively and continuously removes the clot from the blood vessels of the heart, improving blood flow and reducing the risk of further complications. They said the entire process, from inserting the catheter to removing the clot, took only 10 minutes.
The hospital said that after the operation, the patient’s heart function improved, which led to a faster recovery and reduced risk of complications, adding that the patient was monitored in the intensive care unit for 24 hours and no more invasive procedures were planned. The patient will continue to receive follow-up care and medication.
Talking about the unique procedure, Dr. Palshekar said, “The use of suction catheters in this case is a significant breakthrough in the treatment of heart diseases. The ability to remove thrombi using mechanical suction provides a safe and effective solution, especially in cases where the thrombus burden is significant.” .
