Talor Gooch was ranked 35 in the world when he made his debut at LIV Golf, just over a year ago. He was among the top 20 in the American Ryder Cup standings. However, the golfer has since fallen from the world rankings. Despite winning three times and finishing in the top 10 out of every other five starts to lead the long points race in the LIV Golf Individual Ranking, Gooch is clearly out of the U.S. team’s reach.

Gooch, who has won LIV events in Australia, Singapore and Spain, is considered an ideal pick for the Ryder Cup by many. However, since LIV Golf’s events do not receive official World Golf Ranking points, it lacks a chance to move up the US Ryder Cup standings. Notably, the golfer dropped from 12th in the Ryder Cup rankings last May to 86th this week. Now, the golfer has come out to comment on the same.

Speaking of his missed opportunities in the Ryder Cup, Tallor Gooch said he would be on the American team if it was “apples for apples.” The golfer said he received 137 text messages after winning LIV Golf Andalucía and all he could think about was whether he could make the USA team for Rome.

Talor Gooch said, as quoted by LIV Golf:

My immediate thought was, I wonder what this means for the Ryder Cup? If it’s apples upon apples, the guy leading the FedExCup and the guy leading the LIV ranking, it’s like — I think my play has shown to be at least worth discussing.

At the end of the day, the better you play, the more discussion you’ll hopefully have. I have to win, and I have to go prove I’m worth having a discussion about.”

When asked about his expectations for the Ryder Cup at LIV Golf, Gooch said:

“At the end of the day, the professional golf world has been in a crazy place for the last 365 days. I’ve always dreamed of being in the Ryder Cup. Before making the decision to come to LIV, Max Homa was one of my good buddies on the PGA Tour, and we talked about — my wife and I had a month Our honeymoon is in Italy, and we honeymooned in Rome, and he and his wife couldn’t do our honeymoon in Italy, so we’ve always talked in the last couple of years that, well, we just have to move a team over there and go do it.

It’s clearly out of my hands. It is beyond my control. But the only thing I can control is playing golf well. I will continue to do this to the best of my ability and hopefully it will go well.”

Talor Gooch could miss out on a place in the Ryder Cup despite his fine form

It is worth noting that Tallor Gooch has not spoken to American Captain Zack Johnson. The captain also didn’t attend any LIV Golf event to scout potential players for his team, hinting at his disdain for all the recalcitrant players in the Saudi-backed series.

For the untrained, Gooch doesn’t have the best track record in international events. A golfer’s best finish in a major tournament came at last year’s Masters when he finished 14th. However, Gooch doesn’t think his past major results should distract people from his current form.

The 31-year-old, who may be in his prime at the moment, is still excited about the chances of playing in international team competition.
