Bearing in mind the rise in suicides in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) – 54 deaths in 2020, 57 in 2021, 43 in 2022 – the DIG (Social Welfare) has sent an action plan to all sector headquarters involving implementation Programs on mental health awareness, financial education, and the appointment of a family liaison officer in each unit / company.
The DIG’s speech followed a meeting with CRPF’s director general, Dr Sujoy Lal Thaosen, last month, during which the social care branch also discussed the medical support system for families at home, special care and treatment for mental disorders.
“It was subsequently decided that consideration could be given to establishing a central mental health care center for CRPF by designating one of its core hospitals/combination hospitals,” DIG said in its letter sent a few days ago.
He said, “All sector headquarters have been required to conduct mental health awareness programs with identification of mental disorders, suicidal tendencies, etc. during basic on-duty trainings and in all forums.”
“All sector headquarters have been notified that financial awareness programs for financial literacy and avoidance of heavy loans/debts will help in forcing employees to live secure lives. Regular classes should be conducted on social issues such as changing the social paradigm in the joint family system, extramarital relations With remedial measures at various levels by the sector headquarters.”
“All sector HQs shall ensure that each CRPF unit/company shall nominate an appropriate member of the force as a Family Liaison Officer (FLO), a person of good culture, courteous and of good temper. He shall have all details of family background, character and antecedents for each An individual from his or her respective unit/company The FLO will continue to interact with the jaw family members, especially after they return from vacation.
The staff should be made aware of the need to empower women. DIG said they should ensure that their family members learn driving, online banking, effective communication and financial management, which will solve some of their burdens.
In the three years from 2020 to 2022, 463 individuals died by suicide in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles, out of which 154 were killed.
The Indian Express earlier reported that subgroup discrimination, workplace bullying, fear of initiating disciplinary or legal action, and lack of communication between company leader and employees were some of the reasons cited by a task force set up to look into cases of suicide and fratricide in CAPFs.
