Delhi Airport sources reported that a 40-year-old air passenger who was on an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to the national capital on July 8 opened the emergency exit door flap of the plane during take-off, according to Delhi airport sources.

The accident occurred on board Flight 6E 5605 and the person was handed over to security personnel after landing at Delhi Airport. An FIR was filed against the individual.

The sources said that the unruly behavior of the pilot caused panic among the other passengers, the flight crew and the captain.

The passenger was seated in seat 18A near the emergency exit door. They added that after the accident, the emergency exit cover was immediately restored and the passenger was moved to another seat on the plane.

A query sent to IndiGo for feedback on the incident remained unanswered.

According to safety experts, the emergency exit door handle has a cover that protects it from opening due to cabin pressure or other accidental causes.

“If the flap is removed, the handle is open and it can be opened during landing for any reason and it is dangerous for the aircraft,” said SS Panesar, former Director of Flight Safety at Ex-India Airlines.

A crew member from an airline told PTI that the emergency exit flap could not have been accidentally opened.

You have to pull it out and it takes effort. “No one can do that except out of harm’s way,” a crew member said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Passengers who are assigned seats near the emergency exit are told categorically that the lid or handle is not to be tampered with. If any passenger did, it was obviously out of some mischief. “It comes under the definition of unruly behavior because it endangers the aircraft,” said one of the crew members.

The sources said that based on a complaint filed by the airline, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against the individual.

The police invoked Section 336 of the Indian Penal Code which deals with endangering the personal safety of others and Section 22 of the Aircraft Rules for refusing to follow lawful instructions issued by the pilot-in-command or flight crew, they said.
