Former journalist and film critic Rajeev Masand has interviewed many celebrities over the past few years but for him, one of the most memorable interviews was when he met his idol, actor Sridevi in 1996 during the shooting of Judaai. He shared that the actor wasn’t very fond of talking and wasn’t really comfortable with many reporters.
On the podcast Back to the Beginning with Janice Sekera, Rajeev recalled meeting Sridevi in Hyderabad and how she pretended to read a book so she wouldn’t have to talk so much. “I remember I met Sridevi during Godai and at that time, we used to do set visits and it was in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. I was taken there with a rickshaw loaded with journalists to interview Sridevi and I remember it was on the sets. Rajeev recalls of the actor who passed away In 2018, “I remember her being so scared to see so many journalists.”
He added, “I remember her gathering a smile politely. It was like the celebrities were sitting there and all the journalists would be here one by one. I remember her reading a book or pretending to read a book because she didn’t want to participate. She was really shy and it didn’t come from a place of arrogance or not Respect. It wasn’t something she liked to do. She didn’t like to talk and you could tell she wasn’t really reading a book. It was a clutch not having to look at the reporter.”
Painting a clear picture of what film journalism looked like in the past, Rajiv said that actors often mix with journalists on sets, but Sridevi has not changed throughout her years of being a star.
“This was a time when it wasn’t stage management. It was a time when an actor would come in, sit you down, engage you mid-take, and then one by one, we get the interview one by one. Sridevi wasn’t social. It was nice to see her with a book.” And don’t really read a book.” She didn’t want to do business with you,” said Rajiv.
The conversations for print interviews are manageable, he said, unlike in television interviews where it’s obvious to the audience when the conversation gets off balance.”
“I remember when I did the interview, she probably talked more than I did but it was beautiful. You know he came from a place of social awkwardness and not feeling more comfortable speaking up. And years later one gets more opportunities to interview her and that hasn’t changed. It’s just her. You don’t like to talk, and some people don’t like to talk and you put in more effort. But then it was in print and you could do a lot more but when TV came along it was very difficult when someone didn’t talk, you talk more than them just to fill in those ugly blanks,” he said.
