A social worker with the fire department on Friday rescued a chick Indian Gray Hornbillwhose claws were entwined in a strong web of polymaterials inside its nest on a silver oak tree in Sector 18B.

According to witnesses, the little bird was desperately trying to get out of the nest, but was unable to because its talons were entangled in the nest. The high-pitched squeaking sounds of chicks and a pair of hornbills, which sounded like a pair of parents, caught the attention of passers-by around 10:30 in the morning. A double folded ladder was used to access the hollow nest.

“I found the claws of the panicked chick injured. We used a knife to cut the strings. I assume the chick stuck its claws into things its parents had collected inside the nest,” said Lead Fire Officer Vinod Bishnu, who led the rescue team. He added that while they were feeding the hornbills, a couple of birds kept making loud noises. “Later, the chick was able to move, took flight, and sat on a tree branch,” Bishnoi said.

Kusum, a social worker and resident of Sector 45, said a passerby called her and told her of the bird’s pity. “I rushed to the spot. It was a heart-rending sight. The loud, piercing calls of the girl and the husband were like screams. I called emergency number 112 and barely eight to ten minutes later a fire engine arrived from Sector 17 Fire Station,” added Kusum.

She said the operation took about 45 minutes. Kusum also revealed that she was not aware of the type of little bird, after which an onlooker told them that she was an Indian Gray Hornbill – the state bird of Chandigarh.

It cannot be said that this rescue operation is complete. The chick was injured. “She should have been handed over to a veterinary facility,” said the bird watcher.
