Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Dara Singh Chauhan He resigned from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Saturday. Sources said he will soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Sources in the UP Council confirmed Chauhan’s resignation. However, he gave no reason for the move in his resignation letter. The sources added that Parliament Speaker Satish Mahana approved Chauhan’s resignation.

Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior BJP leader said, “Dhara Singh Chauhan will join the BJP very soon. But it is not yet decided from which constituency he will contest the Lok Sabha elections.”

However, another BJP leader said the party may send Chauhan from the Gosi Lok Sabha constituency from which the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won in 2019 while competing with the SP.

Chauhan was the Minister for Forestry, Environment and Animal Husbandry in the Adityanath government from 2017 to 2022. He resigned from the Cabinet on 12 January 2022. In his resignation letter, Chauhan then said that he was upset with the BJP government’s rejection of those from the backward castes, the underprivileged, the Dalits and the farmers , unemployed youth and “khulwad” with reservations for the backward castes and Dalits.

Subsequently, the Socialist Party Chairman, Akhilesh Yadav, in his tweet, called Chauhan a soldier of social justice.

Chauhan started his political career with BSP and later joined SP. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for two terms in 1996 and 2000 and according to the Rajya Sabha website, he was elected as a candidate of the Socialist Party and was also the national executive member of the party. He belongs to the Lonia-Chauhan, a backward caste centered in the Azamgarh and Varanasi divisions of eastern UP.
