Former Williams Formula 1 team principal Claire Williams has said she may start watching the sport again after her “painful” exit from the sport in 2020.
Williams took over her father’s duties as team principal in 2013 and led the team into the new ear of F1. The Briton left the sport after years of financial troubles that left the iconic team battling at the bottom of the grid in F1. Williams left the role after the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, after the family sold the team to American investors Dorilton Capital.
talk with sunWilliams stated that it was difficult to watch the races after the family’s reluctant exit from the sport, saying:
“I don’t watch it anymore. It was a really conscious decision because I’m still recovering from the slump. Leaving my team left a huge gap. We were reluctant sellers. Life took us down that road where we were forced to sell.”
Williams added that she might start watching again that she even thinks is painful to watch, saying:
“I’ve gotten to that point now where I’m going to start watching again. It’s still painful and hard to see another person running the team that once was in our family and our lives.”
Claire Williams says she is glad the Williams name is still in the sport despite her passing, with former Mercedes man James Fowles taking over the team captaincy ahead of the 2023 season.
She said:
“It’s good that Williams as a name is still standing in F1. With James now there, it looks like the team is going in the right direction. When they told me it was James I was like, ‘Oh my God, just a genius.’ He’s a great choice. I really think that My dad would have been really happy with that decision, too.”
She also spoke about former official George Russell’s success in Formula 1 after her move to Mercedes and added:
“I’m really proud of George and so happy for him because we parked him at Williams and kept him on his contract. My dad taught me, when you have a struggle, success is when you finally get it, it’s so much more rewarding.”
Only time will tell if Williams can achieve everything they set out to do under Vowles. They are currently 7th in the Constructors’ Championship.
