Hanuma Vihari showed the captaincy sitting on him gently as he led South Zone to the Duleep Trophy title, and improved the moment by contributing 105 runs in two innings.
The performance will surely boost Vihari’s credentials in his bid to regain his lost place in the Indian team. But for now, it is quite understandable that the right holder described the whole experience as a “pleasant” experience. “Yes! I definitely enjoyed the captaincy. When you have a team like this, you will enjoy playing the captain,” said Vihari, who will be joining Madhya Pradesh for the rest of the domestic season.
However, Vihari complimented South Zone’s bowling attack.
“When you have that kind of bowling attack, the pressure of the captains will go down. It was our plan to get them down to less than three runs (per over), and they’ve done it because the quality bowlers will make the captain’s job really easy,” said Vihari.
Vihari also reserved a special word of praise for three Karnataka pacers, Vidwath Kaverappa, Vijayakumar Vyshak and Vasuki Koushik.
The Troika took 16 of Western Province’s 20 wickets to fall in this match.
“All three Karnataka fast bowlers who have played this match know the wicket very well. I have also said earlier that having bowlers who know the conditions is an advantage for us.
“But to be able to use him is another thing, all three have shown their skills. West Zone players have a lot of quality on paper and to pull off the special skills needed and they’ve executed them really well,” he said.
Vihari said Sarfaraz Khan’s dismissal late in the evening of the fourth day was the turning point in the match.
“Yesterday in the third session, Priyank and Sarfaraz did really well. I thought his dismissal was the turning point.
“If Sarfaraz had been around, he could have handled the spell of Vidwath and Koushik, and getting Sarfaraz’s wicket in the last session was the turning point,” Vihari said.
