Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger has delivered his verdict on Mikel Arteta’s three new signings this summer.

Arsenal have spent a lot to sign Declan Rice, Ljørn Timber and Kai Havertz. The England midfielder is their latest signing, with the North London outfit agreeing to pay West Ham United £105m for his services.

Prior to Rice, Mikel Arteta oversaw the arrival of Timber from Ajax for £38m. Add to that the £65m Arsenal paid Chelsea last month to sign Kai Havertz, and their summer spending tops out at £200m.

Wenger, who himself was an advocate of signing young players with potential during his time at the Emirates, said via Eurosport (h/tAfcStuff on Twitter):

“I think it’s a good investment. Overall, personally I think they make good purchases because they’re mature players now, 23, 24 and still young, so they can stay together for a few years.”

Arguably, Rice, 24, has been the first name on West Ham’s squad sheet every week. He led them to their first major trophy in 43 years last season when they won the European Conference League title.

Timber, 22, has been capped 15 times for the Netherlands and made 120 appearances for Ajax in the past three seasons. Havertz (24) also gained respectable experience during his stints with Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea.

The German scored 32 goals and 15 assists in 139 appearances during his three seasons with Chelsea.

Declan Rice has come to Arsenal “hungry” for success

Young Arsenal team Mikel Arteta came close to winning the English Premier League before being overtaken by Manchester City at the end of last season.

The Spanish tactician has since agreed to sell Granit Xhaka (30) and Pablo Mari (29), while Thomas Partey (30) is also linked with an exit. It seems to reduce the club’s average age even more ahead of the new season.

Declan Rice is expected to anchor the young defender’s midfield next season and has stated that he is aware of what the fans are asking. Speaking in his first interview after his arrival in the UAE, the Englishman told the club’s official website:

“With Mikel and the way he works, the team, how young everyone is, the energy around the club and also the challenge of getting Arsenal back where they belong, it means a lot to me. I know the fans really want it. Me as a player, I come here really hungry to achieve.” More success and to spend my best years in this great club.”

The average age of the North London Premier League side last season was 24.1 years.
