Starting this winter, Himadri, India’s scientific research center, will be operational throughout the year.
Located in Spitsbergen, Norway, Himadri can host eight scientists conducting research and observations. However, the scientists only work there during the summer and leave the station during the winter months.
While speaking to the media in Pune after his visit to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Union Minister for Geosciences Kiren Riju said, “We have plans to ensure the station is operational in the winter months starting this season.”
Established in 2008, Himadri is primarily concerned with the study of glaciers, permafrost, and melting glaciers. India is the eleventh country to have an Arctic Research and Observation Center.
During the winter months observations of permafrost, Aurora and space weather information will be made, said Dr M Ravichandran, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Geosciences.
“Winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights. The station will be used to study astrophysics and during the winter months continuous observations will be made.
The center will be equipped with new equipment in addition to a sky radio camera.
The union minister also said that the government has plans to set up research centers in every Himalayan state in the country.
I will speak to the chief ministers of all the Himalayan states to find out the possibility. He said the central government would help the states to set up the centres.
Monsoon mission
The Ministry of Earth Sciences will soon launch Monsoon Mission III. The first two missions saw the country develop models as well as change from statistical to dynamic models. The third task will be more focused on studying extreme precipitation events and developing models to predict them.
Meanwhile, KS Hosalikar, Head of Climate Research and Services, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), said the monsoon will pick up in Maharashtra next week.
Weather systems in both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal will see the return of monsoons in the state and in Pune. While Pune is expected to see good rains from early next week, other districts of the state like Marathwada and Vidharbha will receive good showers after July 18.
