A week after the Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) held elections after an 11-year hiatus, Gujarat’s Bharatiya Janata Party chief Kailash Hakim on Saturday took over the chairmanship of the merchants’ body. FOSTTA represents more than 75,000 merchants in more than 200 textile markets in Surat.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Hakim said, “We are happy that the textile merchants elected us. They are tired of the old leadership. On July 23, we organized the swearing-in ceremony at the International Exhibition and Conference Hall in Sarsna. All the political leaders will remain in Surat, including That CR Paatil, present at the event. We will also be extending invitations to the Textile Processing Association, Textile Merchants, Transport Association, and Power-loom Association.”
“After the oath-taking ceremony, our first step will be to register the organization and form a constitution. We will form 10 different committees under the main body and each committee will have 10 members. They will be assigned tasks related to goods and services tax, local textile merchants, troubled areas law, shop rentals and recover the crores of money owed,” he added. on textile merchants in other states.
The new head of FOSTTA said, “We planned to give a different look to FOSTTA and give traders an international platform through an exhibition in foreign countries so that they can get business opportunities. Through seminars and training, we will educate traders to move forward in terms of fashion, meet international requirements and maintain Product quality “.
In the presence of the members of the Election Commission, all the 41 newly elected directors voted for the post of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and elected Kailash Hakeem as Chairman, Dinesh Kataria as Secretary and Nanalal Rathod as Treasurer.
Former President and Foesta Treasurer Manoj Agrawal and Rajesh Agrawal handed over the responsibility of the posts to the newly elected members in the presence of election officials on Saturday.
After 11 years, a total of 634 voters (textile merchants) exercised their voting rights on July 8 at Vankar Textile Market to elect 41 directors. There were two main groups in the battle – one headed by Chambal Bothra (direct secretary of FOSTTA) who called his committee the Ekta Panel, which was supported by the Congress. He was challenged by Hakim who led the BJP-backed Vikas team. Both teams sent 41 candidates. On the last day to withdraw the forms, 21 Ekta team candidates withdrew their candidacy and endorsed Vikas team. For the first time 91 percent of the vote was recorded by the panel of traders
Dinesh Katriya, Secretary of Fausta Organisation, said, “The current major issue facing textile merchants is the bidding and acquisition of shops for rent as our business district falls under the Troubled Areas Act. We will put our side before the state government and ask them to spare shops and commercial establishments.”
