Pimpri Chinchwad Police has arrested a 26-year-old migrant worker who attempted to break into two ATMs of public sector banks within two hours on Saturday. The stalls are less than a kilometer apart from each other in Chakan.
A team from Chakan Police Station swung into action in the early hours of Saturday when the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Control Room got a call from executives of a company that provides security solutions for banks and ATM kiosks. The call concerned an attempted break-in at an ATM booth located in Medankarwadi on the Pune-Nashik Highway around 1.30 am. After validating the call, a team from Chakan Police Station was dispatched to the site.
Senior Inspector Vaibhav Chingari, in charge of Chakan Police Station, said, “Our team reached the ATM booth and found that someone tried to break the cash machine with a blunt object. Footage was obtained from the security cameras installed in the booth from the bank officials. In the video recording, A man can be seen trying to break the machine with a rock.” After giving a description of the suspect’s appearance and clothes, the search team found the suspect in the same area and arrested him.”
Police said the arrested suspect is Mohammad Sarfaraz Kalamuddin Ansari, 26, from Rohtas in Bihar, and had moved to Pune a few weeks ago in search of work. “Upon interrogation of the suspect and subsequent investigation, another attempt to break into another ATM kiosk, also a public sector bank, in the same area emerged. CCTV footage from the kiosk confirmed the involvement of the same suspect. Two separate cases were registered against him. The second ATM kiosk It is also a public sector bank.
In 2020 and 2021, a series of burglaries and attempted robberies were reported at ATM kiosks in Pune, with most of the targeted kiosks located in industrial areas in and around Pune. Investigations revealed that most of the thefts took place in deserted areas at night. Despite clear instructions from the Reserve Bank of India and frequent communication from the police and banks and non-bank entities operating ATM kiosks, it has failed to provide adequate security cover, officials noted. Several such robberies have been reported in and around the Shakan area.
