Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has reportedly decided to part ways with their head coach Sanjay Bangar and director of cricket operations Mike Hesson. The duo have formed the core of the franchise’s coaching unit over the past five seasons, as they have managed to qualify for the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs three times – 2020, 2021 and 2022.

RCB failed to reach the fourth round during the 2023 IPL season, thus extending their wait to win the first title. The team led by Faf du Plessis finished fifth in the points table, with a dramatic exit on the last day of the home league stage against Gujarat Titans (GT).

Bangar, who was previously involved with Punjab Kings and the Indian cricket team at coaching level, was initially appointed as a consultant ahead of the 2021 season. He was then appointed as the team’s head coach in 2022.

Hesson, a former New Zealand coach, was appointed by RCB in 2019 as Director of Cricket Operations. He served as the head coach of the Punjab franchise until his resignation in the same year.

They worked closely with Virat Kohli through his ups and downs over their respective tenures. They also played a major role in auction and recruitment strategy. However, as per a report by Indian Express, the franchise management is keen on bringing in fresh faces with fresh ideas.

The report further adds that the three-time finalists are deliberating over the fate of bowling coach Adam Griffiths. The management has not yet decided whether to bring in an Indian driving instructor or to field a candidate from abroad.

The likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have shuffled their coaching staff ahead of the 2023 season, with Chandrakant Pandit and Mark Boucher respectively taking over as head coaches. In addition, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) also finished hiring Justin Langer as their new head coach in place of Andy Flower.

The former Zimbabwe player is reportedly looking for new assignments within the confines of the cash-rich league. He can be considered a real candidate for this task given the accolades he has received as a coach.
