Criticizing opposition parties for their low strength in the legislature, Prime Minister Eknath Shinde said on Sunday that the opposition is nowhere to be seen and the matter is confused.

Today the opposition boycotted the tea party. Ideally, the opposition raises issues about people, but the message they sent today is more of an in-house resolution. Confused opposition lost its pride. “What we’re seeing today is an opposition that has lost its nerve,” Shinde said. He was addressing a press conference on the eve of the monsoon session of the state legislature, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar and cabinet ministers.

One has to look for opposition in the Assembly, said Shinde. Although they are a weak front, we will not give them a secondary status. He said the issues raised by the opposition would be answered and taken note of.

Shinde claimed that the government has the support of more than 210 paralegals in the 288-member assembly. It has reduced the strength of the opposition to just 78. The entire ruling side stressed the uneven numbers game in the assembly by claiming that they would nonetheless not ignore the issues raised by the opposition.

Earlier, the two opposition MPs were also critical. They have no knowledge of issues that concern the state. It is true that our strength has increased after Ajit Pawar joined the government. But we will not abuse the increased power. “We will do justice to the pro-people issues raised by the opposition,” he said.

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said that the government will hardly push the House measures on the basis of majority in the House. We believe in democracy and no one will be left behind. “The issues raised by the opposition will not be forgotten,” he said. Pawar as Leader of the Opposition had previously criticized the state government for the absence of ministers during House proceedings. “We will ensure that there are enough ministers in the council when discussions take place,” he said.
