The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday 14 July named India’s men’s and women’s teams for the 2023 Asian Games.
While the men’s team will be from the second string, captained by Fattah Ruturaj Gaikwad, the women’s team will be captained by regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur and feature most of the big names who have been playing regularly.
The Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8. The men’s cricket event will run from September 28 to October 8 in T20 format. Meanwhile, the women’s competition will be held from September 19 to September 28, also in a T20 format. The matches will be played at the Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Ground.
With the announcement of the men’s and women’s teams for the 2023 Asian Games, we have chosen a combined lineup that includes both teams.
openers: Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal
It was really difficult to dismiss Smriti Mandhana, but due to her current poor condition and the recent exploits of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the two male cricketers have made the move.
Gaikwad had a solid campaign in IPL 2023, scoring 590 runs in 16 matches at an average of 42.14 and a strike rate of 47.50. He played a key role in the victory of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Gaikwad’s partner Jaiswal is currently in the news for his impressive hundreds on his Test debut. He was man-of-the-match by scoring 171 off 387 balls against the West Indies in Dominica, batting narrowly with 16 fours and two sixes. He also had an impressive IPL for Rajasthan Royals (RR), hitting 625 runs at a strike rate of 163.61.
middle order: Tilak Pharma, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Rinku Singh, and Richa Ghosh (wk)
Tilak Varma has played some great batting for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL. In 25 matches over two seasons, he scored 740 runs at an average of 38.95 and a strike rate of 144.53. The 20-year-old left-handed batsman has shown maturity beyond his age in difficult circumstances.
Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, meanwhile, will lead India’s Unified squad for the 2023 Asian Games. A proven performer in white-ball cricket, she also inspired the Mumbai Indians women’s team to victory in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) tournament. Kor can play big shots, while scoring at a fast pace and he can also hit the ball.
Rinku Singh and hitting guard Richa Ghosh could be the team’s two batters. Rinku had an exceptional IPL 2023 campaign for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), playing some scintillating knocks. Ghosh can also come in and play the rapid-fire cameo, which can swing with the momentum of the contest.
comprehensive: Deepti Sharma
There was a fierce fight between Washington Sundar and Deepti Sharma over each player’s spot. However, previously inconsistent running and recurring fitness issues come in the way, giving Sharma the nod.
Sharma is a class non-spinner with over 100 T20I scalps and can partner with hand etching with the bat.
shooters: Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Avish Khan, and Anjali Sarvani
Ravi Bishnoi’s deft leg movement can complement Deepti Sharma. He has been very impressive in the IPL, firstly for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and then for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Bishnoi has a good record for India too, taking 16 wickets in 10 matches. Overall, he has 101 scalps in 87 T20s.
Left bowler Arshdeep Singh will lead the attacking pace in India’s assembled squad for the 2023 Asian Cup. After making a huge impact in the Indian Premier League, the pace bowler joined India’s T20I squad and did not disappoint. In 26 T20Is, the 24-year-old has taken 41 wickets at an average of 17.78 and a strike rate of 12.7.
Avesh Khan and Anjali Sarvani could be the other two bowling options for the 2023 India Inter-Asian Games XI. Avesh has claimed 106 wickets in 87 T20s so far at an average of 23.94. He has experience representing India in five ODIs and 15 T20Is.
The left arm pacer has put in some impressive home runs and also played six T20Is for India.
